Sanitary Valves Guide – Most Common Types of Sanitary Valves Used in Food Processing

Sanitary valves are especially designed to be used in applications that need sterile and clean processing. They are most commonly used in food, dairy, medical, chemical, and pharmaceutical applications.

Some of the most common features of sanitary valves include crevice free, easy cleaning, as well as polished contact surfaces. Let us explore more about them in the following sections.

Basic types

  • Diaphragm valves

They make use of elastomeric diaphragm rather than elastomeric liner in body of valve for separating flow stream and closure element. They are quite related to the pinch valves.

  • Globe valves

They are basically linear motion valves having rounded bodies. They are used in industry for regulating the fluid flow and in throttling service.

  • Gate or knife valves

They too are linear motion valves in which flat closure element tends to slide into flow stream to offer shut off. They are categorized into two basic types, wedge-shaped and parallel.

  • Needle valves

They have tapered, slender point at end of valve stem which is lowered through seat for blocking the flow. The fluid that is flowing through it turns around 90 degrees. It then passes through orifice that is seat for rod with cone shaped tip.

  • Ball valves

They offer characteristic control and tight shut off. They even have quite high range-ability as a result of the design of regulating element.

  • Plug sanitary valves

They are even referred to as stop-cock or cock valves. These days, they are most widely used ones for both throttling and on/off services.

  • Butterfly valves

They are opening valves comprising of vane or metal circular disk with pivot axes at right angles to direction of the flow in pipe. When rotated on shaft, the seals seats in valve body. They are generally used as the throttling valves for controlling the flow.

Materials of Sanitary valves

Body material of the sanitary valves can be either plastic or metal. The metal choices include bronze, brass, ductile iron, copper, stainless steel, or cast iron. The plastic choices usually include CPVC and PVC. Some of the common end connections generally include socket-weld, threaded, push on, lugged, mechanical joint, flanged, grooved end, and clamp.  The sanitary valve actuation kinds include pneumatic, manual, and electric.

Overall, sanitary valves are highly used in drinks and food industries. Just make sure to choose the one matching your specific application needs!
